YB Menteri Pengajian Tinggi lancarkan HEIGIP: UiTM Sekretariat

Rahim Md. Noor, Naib Canselor Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Dato’ Prof Ir.

What is Impact Factor?

The impact factor, often abbreviated IF, is a measure reflecting the average number of citations to articles published in science and social science journals. It is frequently used as a proxy for the relative importance of a journal within its field, with journals with higher impact factors deemed to be more important than those with lower ones. The impact factor was devised by Eugene Garfield, the founder of the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI), now part of Thomson Reuters. Impact factors are calculated yearly for those journals that are indexed in Thomson Reuters Journal Citation Reports.

Key Points :
  • The only quantitative way of ranking a journal
  • A quantitative measure of the frequency with which the "average article" published in a given scholarly journal has been cited in a particular year or period.
  • Is used in citation analysis
  • It is calculated each year by the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) for those journals which it tracks, and are published in the Journal Citation Report.
  • Impact Factors have a huge, but controversial, influence on the way published scientific research is perceived and evaluated
Calculation of Impact Factor

The impact factor for a journal is calculated based on a three-year period, and can be considered to be the average number of times published papers are cited up to two years after publication. For example, the 2007 impact factor for a journal would be calculated as follows:
A = the number of times articles published in 2005-6 were cited in indexed journals during 2007
B = the number of articles, reviews, proceedings or notes published in 2005-6
             2007 impact factor = A/B
  • (note that the 2007 impact factor was actually published in 2008, because it could not be calculated until all of the 2007 publications had been received.)

Book Review : From A to Zine

Product Description
This unique and comprehensive guide is a must-have for any librarian thinking about starting a zine collection. Bartel uses her experiences creating the Salt Lake City Library zine collection, currently the largest public library collection in the country, as the basis for the book. Her purpose is to inspire librarians to delve into the world of the alternative press - and inspire she does. She shares not only her experiences putting the collection together, but also of dealing with the diverse membership of the zine community, giving novices insight into its world through her own commentary and through quotations from zinesters themselves. The advice is invaluable. Beginning with a short history of zines and the culture that surrounds them, Bartel presents a compelling argument as to why public libraries should include these materials in their holdings. She embraces their controversial nature, addressing potential problems and suggesting solutions. Readers are taken step by step through the process of collection development, cataloging, and even display and publicity. Black-and-white photographs are few but are helpful in illustrating how her library's collection is organized. An outstanding effort. - Michele Capozzella, Chappaqua Public Library, NY

Book Review : Introduction to Languages and the theory of computation

Product Description

Introduction to Languages and the Theory of Computation helps students make the connection between the practice of computing and an understanding of the profound ideas that defines it. The book's organization and the author's ability to explain complex topics clearly make this introduction to the theory of computation an excellent resource for a broad range of upper level students. The author has learned through many years of teaching that the best way to present theoretical concepts is to take advantage of the precision and clarity of mathematical language. In a way that is accessible to students still learning this language, he presents the necessary mathematical tools gently and gradually which provides discussion and examples that make the language intelligible.Amazon.com Review
Even those with little mathematical background will be able to understand this user-friendly book, which focuses on formal languages and models of computation. (The author devotes an entire chapter to induction and recursive definitions.) Introduction to Languages and the Theory of Computation weaves numerous examples and highly readable discussions of the key ideas--and how they fit into the larger picture--in between rigorous proofs of the theorems.
